Joburg local DJ Kaymo @djkaymoworld is central to the hip hop scene in South Africa and has his finger on the pulse of what is happening. We caught up with the man for our #InTheHouse series as he details how he became a DJ, his post lockdown plans and more. Check out the latest exclusive interview below.
HOW ARE YOU? ARE YOU COPING WITH THE LOCKDOWN ?
“Well want to be honest it’s just a bit frustrating because we can’t go outside and make money like we always do but we are still alive and I’m just trying to keep sane during this lockdown.”
HOW WAS IT DROPPING YOUR “NIGHTMARES” SINGLE DURING LOCKDOWN? WAS IT ANYTHING THAT YOU EXPECTED?
“I had just dropped the single titled “Next Door” featuring Focalistic, Manu WorldStar and Zingah in February 3 months ago and the plan was always to drop “Nightmares” around this time so it was already in the year plan to drop the song.”
HAVE YOU FOUND IT TO BE EASIER TO MAKE MUSIC DURING THIS TIME OR HARDER?
“Well, I don’t find it harder to make music during tough times, it actually motivate me and give me more inspiration to want to make music because it’s the only thing I can do now. I can’t express myself during set, all I can do is play and make music so the people can play at home.”
WHAT MOTIVATES YOU TO MAKE MUSIC ? OR WHO ?
“What motivates me to make music is how I’m feeling at that time, what kind of emotion I’ll be going through or the current situation I’m in at that specific point. The environment you’re in also plays a huge role for me. And then seeing guys like Drake, DJ Snake, their work ethic drives me to become a better version of myself.”
ON THE TOPIC OF BEING ON SET, HOW DID YOU BECOME A DJ?
“To be honest I’ve always enjoyed music and music is always been the thing that ran the family, I mean my dad was that guy at every party playing music and all. So in grade 7 when my mom got me my first laptop I fully fell into this and from there on got to High School, I got my second mixer and since then [yeah]. I started DJing on Virtual DJ on my laptop in 2009 which was grade 7 and when I go to high school it got more serious and i started playing at school events and playing at school V-balls [you know], so I can say I started DJing properly in high schools in 2010. “
WHAT’S YOUR DAY-TO-DAY LOOKING LIKE THESE DAYS?
“hm.. My day-to-day well most of time I wake up, meditate, thank the man above you know it’s like a routine it’s morning ritual that I do. Drink lots of water, start my day, maybe eat breakfast and first thing I do is open my emails crazy enough and I was trying to get some work done [yeah] so that’s mostly what I do most of the time, I check my emails before my phone.”
HAVE YOU PICKED UP ANY NEW HOBBIES RECENTLY?
“Actually I have a, I’ve started cooking a lot now and not because I never used to cook before but cooking is a hobby now and I’ve started enjoying it recently. I’ve also started reading a book so that’s also helping me; I’m reading now.”
WHAT’S THE FIRST THING YOU WANT TO DO AFTER THIS LOCKDOWN IS OVER?
“Definitely going on a vacation, I want to go on a bootcamp where I’ll be able to make music elsewhere besides my place and the studio, I would like to get away I think is holiday is highly needed.”
WHAT YOU BEEN WEARING A LOT LATELY ?
“Well during this lockdown I’ve been rocking a whole lot of the tracksuits to be honest. I been in a lot of Nike tracksuits, a lot of sweat pants cause I’m at home I’m in my comfort zone, it’s always just comfortable clothes.”
WHOSE ON YOUR PLAYLIST AT THE MOMENT ? WHO HAVE YOU BEEN LISTENING TO ?
“Definitely myself [laughs] , an artist called Espiquet he is really dope, better look out for him Espiquet, Focalistic, Maglera Doe Boy, basically all my friends, I play my friends’ music, that’s the only thing that’s keeping sane during this quarantine because once this music gets out there it gives me hope that everything is going to be fine”
NAME ONE THING YOU’VE DONE DIFFERENTLY DURING THIS LOCKDOWN THAT YOU WILL CONTINUE DOING.
“One thing I’ve learnt is that we need to look at life at a different approach, so my approach to life is definitely different now because we plan things without knowing what the future holds. I mean look at what’s happening now, everybody planned for like five years and now those five year plans are ruined because of this pandemic. So preparation is key”
LASTLY, ANY ADVICE FOR OTHER ARTISTS OR DJ’S LIKE YOURSELF DURING THIS TIME?
“I don’t have a lot of advice because I’m a student of the game as well so I’m still learning and still growing, but what I know is that the times have changed and the revolution and begun. Everything is digital, Everything is online so you need to position your brand in a way that other brands will be able to approach you and use you and just make sure you prepared [you know]. Keep working hard, rectify your mistakes, if you don’t know something it’ always good to do your research and consult other who have done it before you, that just how I do.”
