Part of our #InTheHouse series, we took some time to chat to upcoming artist @gnap_rsa who chats about his start in the industry, some of his inspirations, his latest EP “GRATEFUL” and more. See the exclusive interview below:
HOW ARE YOU? ARE YOU DEALING WELL WITH BEING IN LOCKDOWN?
“I’m doing great thank you. I think this lockdown was a blessings and a curse, a blessings because I am are able to create the best music ever because there is time but its also a curse because we can’t perform all of this beautiful music we are dropping, that interaction with our fans is very important.”
HAVE YOU FOUND IT EASIER OR MORE DIFFICULT CREATE MUSIC?
“It’s been easier because there is more time, in most cases balancing between shows, trying to push the music and making music is hard to balance sometimes but we do our best to always give the best quality.”
WHAT IS YOUR DAILY ROUTINE SINCE THE LOCKDOWN?
“Wake up, eat, mix music we’ve made with my producer, write music or record, eat again, Netflix or stream movies on different sites, YouTube, eat again and sleep.”
WHAT NEW HOBBIES HAVE YOU PICKED UP IF ANY?
“I Netflix alot [laughs]. Shoutout to Pearl Thusi for Queen Sono & Trevor Noah for Patricia’s Son, got mad respect for the King and Queen”
WHAT’S THE FIRST THING YOU WANT TO DO AFTER THIS LOCKDOWN IS OVER?
“I want perform, I love seeing my music make my people happy”
WHICH ARTISTS HAVE YOU BEEN LISTENING TO AT HOME?
“We’ve been listening to a lot of our music honestly, mainly because we either making music or preparing to release music, our people should be on the lookout because we are still about to go in some more.”
HOW WAS IT RELEASING YOUR GRATEFUL EP DURING LOCKDOWN? WAS IT ANYTHING THAT YOU EXPECTED?
“It was honestly amazing because the project got more attention than the other projects i released, I believe growth is part of it but the fact that everyone is at home and on their phones because of the lockdown made it easy to reach more of them.”
“I appreciate all the love I get, I never really have a certain way i expect people to react, which ever way it goes I’m always grateful. We make great music so I believe it’s only a matter of time before we reach the numbers we really deserve but in the meantime I appreciate how everything played out”
BEING BORN AND RAISED IN MAFIKENG, GIVE US YOUR TOP 5 MOTSWAKO SONGS.
“HHP, Thank You Note. Cassper Nyovest, Confused featuring Goapele. Morafe, Jozi City Lights. Tuks Senganga, Let Live and .. Molemi,Amantsi. (respectfully)”
THE FIRST SONG “TSELA” SOUNDS VERY HEARTFELT, WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO MAKE THAT RECORD?
” The song Tsela is not just about me but about what a young kid from where i come from would feel. Tsela is a story inspired by a young black and talented individual from Mafikeng on his path to achieve his dreams. The song talks about this individual trying find a way to greener pastures, leaving everything negative behind, focusing on positive things and making things happen, the plan is to live the dream at the end of the day.”
STILL ON THE TOPIC OF MUSIC, IN 2018 YOU DROPPED THE “IN THE CITY” YOUR 5-TRACK MIXTAPE BUT HOW DID YOU GET INTO MUSIC.
“A lot of my influences come from home, I was always exposed to a whole lot of music from home, different sounds from different individuals because I come from a music orientated family, from hearing Gospel music from my mother, Motswako music fro my brother, Soul R&B from my sister and Jazz from my dad, so all these sounds contributed to me being so diverse.”
WHAT ADVICE DO YOU HAVE FOR OTHER MUSICIANS LIKE YOURSELF DURING THIS TIME?
“Shutdown all the desire and focus on making a lot of music, as an artist you are only celebrated for your work no matter what your situation may be, building a catalog is more important than focusing on hype because come and go but the work you put out remains as a memory & wealth to yourself and the next generation.”
