HOW ARE YOU? HOW IS THE LOCKDOWN TREATING YOU?
“I’m good, I can’t complain at all. The lockdown is treating me good actually. It’s been giving enough time and space to actually work a lot more on my music and my whole career in general. So the lockdown has been good and I am grateful to be able to use this time to better myself and my career. “
WHAT IS YOUR DAY-TO-DAY LOOKING LIKE SINCE THE LOCKDOWN?
“Since the lockdown started I’ve been working on new music and the music is straight up fire. I cannot wait for the people to hear it. So they should expect some music soon. “
HAVE YOU PICKED UP ANY NEW HOBBIES SINCE THIS LOCKDOWN?
“No, I haven’t picked up any new habits. Nothing new really but I’ve been on FIFA more than I used to. I used just game for a few hours but now it’s more than just that. I’m literally in the studio and when I need a break [normal people would take a nap] but I go straight to gaming [laughs]. “
WHAT HAVE YOU BEEN WEARING A LOT LATELY ? ANYTHING SPECIFIC IN ROTATION?
“[laughs] Nothing fancy. This lockdown has me wearing hoodies and sweatpants on rotation. I don’t think chilling at home wearing jeans is comfortable so all anyone needs is a pair cool sweatpants and a hoodie. “
WHOSE ON YOUR PLAYLIST AT THE MOMENT ? WHO YOU BEEN LISTENING TO ?
“I haven’t been listening to a lot of music lately. I’ve just been listening to my unreleased music, trying to make it better. I really enjoy and always want to spend a lot of time on my craft so that I will be able to perfect it. I don’t want to just release or make music that’s just good. I want to always work on it and release something that’s extraordinarily.”
WHO IS MARCUS HARVEY AND WHY THE NAME “MARCUS HARVEY”?
“Marcus Harvey is a 21 year old musician from Alexandra. Harvey is my real name, so in high school I had a friend who said I reminded him of Marcus Garvey [laughs]. So he decided to call me Marcus Harvey and I actually found name dope and from that day I’ve been know as Marcus Harvey and forever will be known as that.”
WHAT FIRST GOT YOU INTO MUSIC?
“Attending open mic sessions alongside Buhle Chonco, professionally known as Pimp Push. Those open mic sessions were great to experience, the talent and the people… amazing.”
YOUR DEBUT, “I AM MARCUS HARVEY”, WHO INSPIRED IT?
“My Mom inspired my album. You know how everybody has a reason for doing something? Yeah, my mother is my reason for doing what I’m doing. Her support and love pushes me through, always.”
IF YOUR PROJECT WAS A CAR , WHAT CAR WOULD IT BE AND WHY?
“It would definitely be a Mercedes Maybach G Wagon. “
WHAT’S YOUR FAVOURITE SONG OFF YOUR PROJECT?
“They say a parent can’t have that favourite child but there always is, so yeah, Send Me To My Love that’s favourite child [laughs]. “
DESCRIBE YOUR SOUND IN JUST 3 WORDS?
WHAT COMES EASIER, WRITING LYRICS OR MELODIES AND CADENCES?
“To be honest, everything comes easy especially when I really f*%k with the beat. If the beat isn’t right nothing will work but if I’m feeling the vibe and the beat is hard, I’m set.”
IF YOU COULD COLLABORATE WITH ANYONE, DEAD OR ALIVE, WHO WOULD IT BE?
“Definitely Brenda Fassie. “
NAME YOUR TOP 5 ALBUMS OF ALL TIME.
“The Healing Component, Mick Jenkins. Good kid Maad City, Kendrick Lamar , When The Morning Comes, Lorin Chia. November, Sir. Lady Lady, Masego.”
WHATS NEXT FOR MARCUS HARVEY?
“Expect a deluxe edition this year. I’m working really hard on it during the lockdown and I promise it will be great.”
ANY ADVICE FOR OTHER ARTISTS AND CREATIVES LIKE YOURSELF DURING THIS TIME?
“Man, all I can say is that keep making music that YOU want to make and believe in your craft. Work hard and always enjoy what you’re doing. Yeah …”
